RAILWAY HVAC SYSTEMS

BACKGROUND ON
Booyco’s Railway Systems
Booyco Engineering has been building customised HVAC systems for the rail industry since 1985.
We have supplied a large number of bespoke HVAC solutions for various local and international rolling stock manufacturers like Transnet, Gibela, Bombardier, Alstom, Siemens and General Electric/Wabtec. Our product offerings extend past the design, testing and production of saloon and driver cab HVACs into cooling systems such as the Cooling Towers for the 23E locomotive’s transformer and converters, built by Bombardier Transportation (Now Alstom Transport).
OUR SOLUTIONS

Supporting you to keep your mobile machinery operational and productive.
Ensuring
comfortable and safe journeys

Purpose built HVAC systems designed for locomotives and passenger trains, providing optimal temperature and air quality control for passengers and drivers.
FEATURED RAILWAY PROJECTS

PRASA Gibela Passenger Train
Saloon Heater and Drivers Footrest
Booyco developed 2 products for the 600 new commuter trains currently being built by Alstom/Gibela for PRASA. The Saloon Heater is a compact heating unit designed to produce 1kW of heating capacity for passengers while the driver’s footrest produces 80W of heating and is used to warm the driver’s feet.
- 32 Saloon Heaters are installed across the 6 cars of each train.
- The Driver’s Footrest is height adjustable to provide an ergonomic resting surface.

General Electric Class 43 Diesel Locomotive
HVAC Unit
Designed for Transnet Freight Rail the bespoke HVAC unit is mounted in the locomotive nose and is fitted with a railway rated custom inverter that controls all HVAC functions, providing heating and cooling, and can operate within a wide range of input voltages.
- Delivers 12.0kW of cooling in a 45°C ambient and 5.0kW of heating.
- Operating range is from -10°C to 49°C.
- No. of units supplied: South Africa 414, Angola 26, Brazil 55, Camaroon 9, USA 80, Pakistan 50

23E Bombardier Locomotive
Driver's cab HVAC and Cooling Tower
Booyco developed 2 products for this locomotive model, the driver’s cab Booyco developed two products for the 23E locomotive; the driver’s cab HVAC, which is based on our design for the 19E locomotive with additional EN specification compliances, and the traction motor transformer and converter cooling tower, which is the first electric locomotive cooling tower designed, built and tested in South Africa
- Both units are rated for +50°C ambient.
- The units are easily installed and removed in keeping with Transnet’s maintenance strategy.
- Combined 240 systems supplied.
- The systems meet the following qualifications: IEC 60571, EN 45545-2, EN 50121, EN61373, EN45545, EN61373, EN15085, ISO1940
